Rocky Mountain House
Competition: 3rd Place
Location: Boulder, Colorado
Project Data: New Construction / 3,611 SF
This home design project was to create a home for an executive couple with an eye towards sustainability and permanence. The Owners were inspired by Japanese and Spanish Colonial design and also wanted an accessible home for potential wheelchair use even though the site was steeply sloped. Exterior building materials were selected due to the fire danger in the mountain west and a desire to have a home that will last “forever.” The house follows a seasonal brook and steps down the site from the garage to the bedrooms, and finally to the main living spaces. Each level is oriented around small courtyards that create unique sheltered outdoor spaces and is connected by a three story elevator for accessibility.
