R550dg – Butterfly House
​Project Data:  550 SF (1-Bedroom,  1-Bath, 1-Story on Concrete Slab, Detached  Garage)

This compact and simple house provides a bright and open Great Room. The vaulted ceiling and large south glazing allow for a generous connection between indoors and out, making the house seem much larger than it is. At 550 SF, it is right-sized for compact living for a couple, a vacation home, or an Airbnb. The steep slope of the butterfly roof facing south can accommodate many solar panels. The large awning window at the Kitchen swings up 90 degrees to allow for a seamless countertop pass-through from interior to exterior. The steep roof extends to the detached garage creating a partially covered breezeway. The attic above the Foyer and Bathroom is a spacious utility/storage room that is accessed by a hidden door and ladder.

his design promotes an environmentally sustainable and healthy structure and is affordable to maintain as the building ages. Some of the features are as follows:
  • The living spaces are oriented around a southern exposure for optimum solar access and natural daylight all day long.
  • The building shell is super-insulated and uses traditional 2x6 framing with Huber Zip System® R-12 Insulated Panels for external insulation.
  • The extra insulation combined with a smaller building size means that the house will use less energy to heat and cool.
  • Durable, low-maintenance fiber cement or exterior grade wood and metal for the exterior finishes reduce long term maintenance costs.
  • The roofline is at a steep angle and has sufficient space for solar panels.
  • Interior materials are specified to be low or no VOC to provide healthy indoor air quality.
